The medina can be overwhelming so my best tip is to grab a msemen from a street cart in the morning, it's this flaky fried bread they fold up and you can get it with honey or cheese. For a proper sit-down meal, try Le Jardin for their couscous on Friday, it's the only day they serve it and the vegetable one is incredible, the rooftop garden is a nice break from the chaos too.

for a first timer, don't sleep on the street food at jemaa el-fna at night - get the snail soup (babbouche) from stall #14 or the grilled lamb offal from the guys with the big skewers. but honestly the best meal i had was a simple tanjia from a hole-in-the-wall near the koutoubia, it's lamb slow-cooked in a clay pot until it falls apart, just ask any local for "tanjia" and they'll point you to the right spot. also skip the fancy riad restaurants, the real stuff is in the back alleys of the medina where you'll see a crowded spot with no sign, that's usually the one

honestly the best thing I ate there was a pastilla at this tiny place called Cafe des Epices, it's not actually a cafe despite the name. the pigeon pastilla with powdered sugar and cinnamon is like nothing you've had before, sweet and savory and flaky. also if you're near the souk in the morning grab a bowl of bissara from one of the old guys with the big copper pots, it's fava bean soup with olive oil and cumin and it costs like 5 dirhams. way better than any tourist breakfast imo
