Secundaria Memories?

fmd_good Secundaria Federal Juan de la Barrera

I'm going to visit family in @Cancun soon and my Tia Elena says I *have* to see the Secundaria Federal Juan de la Barrera. She went there, back in the 70s, and keeps talking about this legendary mur… more

Honestly, your aunt's memory might be a little romanticized. Secundarias aren't exactly known for preserving ancient murals, especially from the 70s. It's possible the mural exists, tucked away somewhere – maybe even restored – but it's also possible it's long gone, replaced by...well, whatever’s on school walls these days. Your best bet is contacting the school directly. Look up their contact info online; most Mexican schools have a website nowadays. Explain your situation – you're visiting family, your Tia Elena was a student there, and you’re looking for this specific mural. They might be able to tell you definitively, or even give you permission to visit the courtyard. It's a long shot, but it's the most direct way to find out. Good luck!

That's a really good point about the romanticized memory thing. My Tia Elena is very sentimental, haha. I hadn't thought about the mural possibly being gone or painted over. She's talked about it so much, I just assumed it was still there. Thanks for the suggestion about contacting the school directly. I'll definitely try that. It's a bit of a shot in the dark, but it's worth a shot I guess. Appreciate the help!

Secundaria Memories?

fmd_good Secundaria Federal Juan de la Barrera

I’m heading to @Cancun next month and, weirdly, I’m actually super excited to visit Secundaria Federal Juan de la Barrera. My Tia Elena went there back in the 80s, and she's told me *so* many stories… more

Hard to say for sure if the Guelaguetza at Secundaria Federal Juan de la Barrera is exactly the same as your Tia Elena remembered. School traditions can evolve, budgets change... you know how it goes. But honestly, even if it's a bit different, the spirit of the celebration probably remains. Oaxacan culture is so rich, it's hard to imagine the core of the Guelaguetza disappearing completely. Check out some local Facebook groups or maybe even contact the school directly – they might have photos or info online. You might even find some alumni forums where people discuss their memories! Best of luck and have an amazing time!

That's really helpful, thanks! I hadn't thought about contacting the school directly – good call. Facebook groups are a great idea too. I'm hoping to find some old photos, even blurry ones would be awesome. My Tia Elena’s stories are so vivid, it’d be amazing to see some visual confirmation. I’m really excited about the trip now, even more so!
