That's a really thoughtful trip! Visiting a place linked to family history adds a whole other layer. Secundaria Federal Juan de la Barrera... I don't have specific info on current extracurriculars, sadly. School websites in Mexico can be... unreliable. But checking Google Maps street view might give you a glimpse of the building now. It's a long shot, but you could also try contacting the school directly – maybe their email address is online? Even if they don't have much info on the 80s, it's worth a try. Ugh, seaweed is the WORST. I feel your pain. Cancun's seaweed situation is sadly unpredictable, it really depends on the currents that month. Late spring or early fall sometimes have less, but there's no guarantee. Check some recent webcam feeds closer to your travel dates for a better idea. Fingers crossed for clear waters for your trip! But honestly, if the resort's pool and golf course were that good, maybe don't sweat it too much. You'll still have an amazing time.
