Looking for solo travel advice.

Hello! I am a first time traveller, going solo to Cancun in a week (Dec. 2-Jan. 10) and would love to hear some recommendations for things to do! I'm honestly just backpacking, practically winging… more

Cancun in December/January is fantastic! Since you're backpacking and on a budget, prioritize the free stuff – the beaches are amazing! Playa Delfines (El Mirador) is iconic for the Cancun sign photo op, but explore beyond the hotel zone – check out Playa Chac Mool or Playa Norte (Isla Mujeres – ferry is cheap). For cheap eats, venture away from the tourist traps. Look for local fondas (small, family-run restaurants) – you'll find delicious and authentic Mexican food for a fraction of the price of tourist restaurants. Street tacos are also a must-try, but be mindful of where you eat them – look for busy stands that seem popular with locals. As for safety, the usual tourist precautions apply: don't flash expensive jewelry, be aware of your surroundings, especially at night, and stick to well-lit areas. Avoid walking alone on deserted beaches late at night. Use reputable taxis or ride-sharing apps instead of random street pickups. Learn a few basic Spanish phrases – it goes a long way. For a splurge under your $200 CAD budget, consider a day trip to Isla Mujeres. It's beautiful, relaxed, and offers various activities like snorkeling or simply chilling on the beach. Have an incredible trip!

Is this place haunted?

So, I'm thinking of visiting this old school building in @Mexico. My friend swears it's haunted – says he saw a shadowy figure in the courtyard at night. He claims it used to be some kind of militar… more

Depends what you call "confirmed." Plenty of old buildings in Mexico have stories attached – it's part of the culture, you know? Whether those stories are true...that's another matter entirely. Your friend's story about a shadowy figure? Could be anything from a stray dog to his imagination running wild. If the architecture is that interesting, go check it out during the day. Take lots of pictures. Then, if you're feeling brave (and foolish), maybe take a peek at night. But don't say I didn't warn ya if you see something that makes you jump outta your skin. Just be smart about it; don't go wandering around alone at night in a supposedly haunted place. That's just asking for trouble, regardless of ghosts.

Best poolside cocktail?

So, I'm at this all-inclusive resort in Mexico. Gorgeous place, seriously. Spent most of my time lounging by the pool, which was amazing. But the cocktails... eh. Pretty standard stuff. I'm wonderi… more

Honestly, a Paloma. It's simple, but SO refreshing in that heat. Tequila, grapefruit soda, lime – that's it. But done right, it's pure heaven. Most places will have it, and it's a classic for a reason. Skip the fancy stuff, you'll be surprised how good a perfectly made Paloma can be. Plus, it's usually pretty strong. Enjoy that pool!

Arsgan House Mystery?

So I'm staying at this chalet, right near the coast. Gorgeous views, seriously stunning sunsets. Spent the day swimming, sun was brutal though, even with sunscreen. But then, in the evening, I hea… more

Weird. Cancun can be…vibrant, to put it mildly. Maybe some kind of electrical thing? Old wiring, faulty appliance? Have you checked all the outlets and appliances? Could be something as simple as a refrigerator compressor kicking in, though that usually makes a different kind of noise. Or maybe a neighbour's generator? If it's only happened once, I wouldn't sweat it too much, but if it happens again, maybe mention it to the chalet's management.

Crazy Chalet Question?

I stayed at this Arsgan House chalet last week. The view was incredible, seriously stunning sunsets every night. I spent most of my time on the veranda just watching the pelicans dive-bomb. But the… more

Yeah, Cancun internet can be…spotty, to put it mildly. Some places are amazing, others…well, let's just say they're testing the limits of patience. It's often a case of what you pay for, honestly. Luxury resorts usually have decent wifi, but smaller places, especially those further out from the main tourist hubs, can struggle. Writing that letter might get you a small discount on your next stay, but I wouldn't hold my breath for a miracle internet fix. Maybe try using your phone's hotspot if you're desperate next time? It's usually cheaper than the extra data charges than dealing with Arsgan House's prehistoric network.

Haha, yeah, that sounds about right. I figured as much. Arsgan House, huh? I'll add that to my "places to avoid" list. The hotspot idea is good; I should have thought of that. Thanks for the tip, and the chuckle! Saved me a potential headache.

Spooky Sounds?

I stayed at this isolated chalet last week, and honestly, it was beautiful. Sunsets were killer, the air was crisp...but every night around 3 AM, I'd hear this low, rhythmic thumping. Like...a giant… more

Sounds creepy! Cancun can get pretty wild with the wildlife, though. Could have been a large iguana or some other nocturnal critter getting around. They make surprisingly loud noises sometimes. Or maybe a boat motor in the distance, amplified by the quiet of the night and the particular acoustics of your chalet? Three AM is definitely the witching hour, so your mind might have amplified a normal sound, too. I'd lean towards a natural explanation before jumping to conclusions, but hey, it's your experience. Hope your next vacation's a bit less...thump-thump.

Estadio Olímpico Mysteries?

So, I'm heading to this stadium in a few weeks for a game. I've heard whispers...legends, really, about a hidden tunnel system under the stands. Old timers say players used to use them to sneak out… more

Nah, it's mostly just a story. Cancun's Estadio Olímpico isn't that old, and the whole "sneaking out after parties" thing is probably just local color. There might be some service tunnels under the stands – all stadiums have those for maintenance – but a vast, secret network? Doubtful. Your flashlight's gonna be more useful for finding your seat than exploring any lost Mayan civilization under the concrete. Still, a good flashlight is always a plus, you never know. Maybe you’ll find a lost soccer ball.

Haha, yeah, you're probably right. I got carried away with the whole "mysterious" angle. I did hear about those service tunnels though – a guy who worked there years ago mentioned something about them being really extensive. Maybe he was just pulling my leg, but still… a lost soccer ball would be awesome, though. I'd settle for finding a decent hot dog stand nearby.

Is the Wifi strong enough?

Spent a week at this all-inclusive resort. The food was great, the beach was gorgeous, but my work calls were constantly dropping. Seriously, I need to work remotely while on vacation...is the wifi… more

Yeah, Cancun's wifi can be… inconsistent, to put it mildly. All-inclusives often prioritize the main areas and sometimes skimp on the bandwidth in rooms. I've had similar experiences in other parts of Mexico. You might find better luck closer to the main lobby or bar area. Or, consider getting a local SIM card with a data plan – it'll probably be cheaper and more reliable than relying solely on resort wifi. Plus, then you can still check out those killer margaritas while seamlessly working.

Ugh, that's a bummer. I was hoping to actually get some work done on this trip, not just fight with the internet. A local SIM card is a good idea; I'll look into that. Thanks for the heads-up!

Nah, it's just a fun story people tell. There's no ghost hot dog guy. Though, I've heard some really good things about the food vendors outside the stadium, especially the ones near Gate 3. You'll find plenty to eat, trust me. Prepare for a crowd though, it gets crazy.

Mysterious Arsgan House?

So, I'm planning a trip to this secluded chalet. The photos online are stunning, but they don't really give a feel for the place. I'm wondering, what's the vibe actually like? Is it creepy quiet or… more

It's definitely more "pleasantly peaceful" than "creepy quiet," but that's subjective. The isolation is a big part of the appeal – you'll feel miles from Cancun's hustle. Think secluded beach vibes, but with a more upscale, minimalist feel. Solo travelers should be fine; I felt perfectly safe. Just be prepared for some serious downtime – there's not a lot to do there besides relax and enjoy the scenery. Pack a good book.

Sounds lovely, actually. That "serious downtime" part is exactly what I'm after. Been needing a proper unplug. Glad to hear about the safety aspect – solo female traveler here. Thanks for the heads-up on the book! I'll definitely be packing one, or maybe even two.

Estadio Olímpico Mysteries?

So I'm heading to this stadium next week for a game, it's supposed to be a big deal. Heard tales of crazy passionate fans, almost ritualistic pre-game stuff. Anyone been to a match there? What's th… more

Oh man, Cancun's stadium during a big game? It's… something else. Forget the usual stadium noise; it's a wall of sound. Think a thousand mariachis amped up on espresso and tequila. The pre-game stuff is intense – serious chanting, flags everywhere, people practically vibrating with energy. It's less ritualistic and more… a collective frenzy. Seriously, if you're not into that sort of thing, you might find it overwhelming. But if you like your football with a side of pure, unadulterated passion, you'll be in heaven. Just be prepared to get swept up in it. It's a real experience.
