UM's Hidden Eats?

Anyone know the best spots for cheap, authentic Malaysian food on campus? I'm trying to avoid tourist traps and find places the students actually go to. My last university visit ended with me eating questionable noodles from a questionable cart. This time, I wanna do better. Hoping to get some local recommendations to avoid another culinary disaster.

Nobody's mentioned the stalls along Jalan Profesor Diraja Ungku Aziz yet, the ones tucked behind the main library block near the bus stop. There's a nasi kerabu stall that opens around 11am and the budu is properly funky, not watered down for outsiders. Bring small notes because most of them don't do QR pay and the nearest ATM is a good ten minute walk toward the residential colleges.

If ur near the engineering fac, the mamak stall at Kompleks Perdanasiswa does a solid roti canai for rm2.50, and they fry it fresh so its not soggy. Go before 9am or the queue gets silly. Also fwiw the Chinese canteen inside the residential colleges does decent wantan mee but it closes early, like 3pm.

the arts fac canteen near the library is where its at, cheap nasi campur and teh o ais for like rm5. if u want something more specific try the malay stalls behind residential college 12, students queue there for nasi lemak from like 7am

Hundreds of birds, all sorts of colours. But I noticed something weird, there was this one section, almost hidden, with just a few really unusual birds, no signs, nothing. They looked...sad? I couldn't figure out what was going on with them. Anyone know the story behind that secluded area? Is it like a bird retirement home or something?

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely

tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.

oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
