My grandma, who lived there for years, always spoke of a hidden tea room within the hospital grounds, a place for staff to unwind. She never revealed the location... anyone know if this legendary tea room still exists? Or is it just one of those family stories that gets embellished over time? I'm hoping to find it, a quiet moment amongst the hustle of the city would be perfect.

grandma might not be wrong but the spot probably wasnt inside the hospital proper. tung shin backs onto jalan pudu & the shophouses around there had those old kopitiams with back rooms staff used to duck into, especially the row near chang kat thambi dollah. i'd poke around there before asking any guard, aunties running those shops remember everything. if it existed it was likely one of those, not an official tea room

My auntie worked at Tung Shin in the 90s and she said the real hidden spot was more of a pantry on the 4th floor near the nurses' quarters, not behind physio. Just a kettle, a stash of kopi-O sachets and a few plastic chairs by the window. Staff only though, so unless you know someone working there you'll prob just get politely turned away at the ward entrance.

Tung Shin sits on Jalan Pudu, and the hospital has expanded a lot since the 90s, so a lot of those old nooks got swallowed up by newer wings. What I'd actually do is walk over to the Shin Juang coffee shop on Jalan Brunei, about five minutes from the hospital entrance. It's not hidden and it's not in the grounds, but it's where a fair number of Tung Shin staff still take their breaks, and the kopi there is better than anything you'd find in a hospital pantry anyway. If the tea room story is real, someone at that table will probably know.

Hundreds of birds, all sorts of colours. But I noticed something weird, there was this one section, almost hidden, with just a few really unusual birds, no signs, nothing. They looked...sad? I couldn't figure out what was going on with them. Anyone know the story behind that secluded area? Is it like a bird retirement home or something?

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely

tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.

oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
