Found myself at Tung Shin Hospital, surprisingly calm considering. The staff were incredibly efficient, even though my Malay is, uh, less than stellar. But the thing is, I overheard snippets of conversation, whispered, hushed tones, about a hidden courtyard or something? Some kind of old legend tied to the hospital grounds. Anyone know anything about that? Was just a rumour spread by bored nurses, or is there actually something to it?

tung shin was actually built in 1881 by the chinese community, kapitan yap ah shak's people were involved if i recall right, the whole stretch along jalan pudu used to be mining land & burial ground before it got developed

the courtyard legend i've heard is more about the old morgue block, not a cemetery. older nurses will tell u they hear trolley sounds at night near the back corridors but that's every old hospital in kl honestly

if u want the real hidden spot, check the small taoist shrine room on the ground floor near the outpatient area, most patients walk right past it. it's still in use & the uncle who maintains it has been there for decades, he'll tell u stories if u ask nicely

my mum did her nursing training at Tung Shin back in the 70s and she says the whispers are about the old cholera wards, not a courtyard. during outbreaks they'd put patients in makeshift blocks out back near where the car park is now, and some died there. she still won't walk that side alone at night, which is saying something cos she's not the superstitious type.

if you wanna ask someone who'd actually know, the old guardhouse near the Jalan Pudu entrance has an uncle who's been there since forever. bring him kopi and he'll talk.

The courtyard you're thinking of is the old cemetery plot behind the original 1881 building, near the Jalan Pudu side. Tung Shin started as a hospital for tin miners and the destitute, and there was a burial ground on the grounds before the city grew around it. Some of the older staff still leave offerings at a small shrine tucked near the physiotherapy wing during Cheng Beng, which is probably where the whispers come from.

I've walked past that corner a few times, it's just an overgrown patch with a few weathered markers, nothing dramatic. The durian and motorbike bit is a more interesting story than anything the hospital's hiding, honestly.

Hundreds of birds, all sorts of colours. But I noticed something weird, there was this one section, almost hidden, with just a few really unusual birds, no signs, nothing. They looked...sad? I couldn't figure out what was going on with them. Anyone know the story behind that secluded area? Is it like a bird retirement home or something?

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely

tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.

oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
