Alustil's Secret?

oh yeah Alustil is a trip. the owner used to be a set designer for local theater so everything has this weird theatrical quality to it. they don't really advertise, just rely on word of mouth from design folks and expats. prices are actually reasonable for what you get, like solid teak pieces for what ikea charges for particle board. just don't go expecting a normal shopping experience, you kinda have to ring the bell and wait for someone to let you in.

Seriously? Alustil? That's... intense. I mean, the furniture itself is probably amazing, but the secretive vibe? Gives me serious speakeasy vibes, only with armchairs instead of cocktails. I bet the story behind that place is wilder than a monkey on a caffeine drip. Worth investigating further, definitely.

ngl i was confused the first time i found it too. the bell system feels like ur doing something illegal but it's just how they roll. if u go on a weekday morning around 10am the owner is usually there and will just chat with u about how each piece was made, he's super passionate but not pushy. they also have this small section of vintage malaysian ceramics nobody talks about, worth checking out while ur there

Hundreds of birds, all sorts of colours. But I noticed something weird, there was this one section, almost hidden, with just a few really unusual birds, no signs, nothing. They looked...sad? I couldn't figure out what was going on with them. Anyone know the story behind that secluded area? Is it like a bird retirement home or something?

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely

tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.

oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
