the museum's education department actually runs themed tours if you book ahead, i did one on islamic calligraphy last year and it was just me and the guide. you can email them and ask specifically about the textile collection, they're pretty flexible about tailoring it. the weaving corner is great but there's also a small room near the back with old songket looms that most people walk past, definitely worth asking about
a friend of mine swears by the museum's "behind the scenes" program, but it's not well advertised. if you ask at the front desk specifically about the textile conservation workshop, they might let you book a slot. i think it's like rm30 and happens on saturdays around 2pm, but only if there's enough interest. the weaving exhibit curator is usually there on those days too, so you can ask him directly about the patterns and dyes they used
honestly you'd prob have better luck asking one of the older guards near the textile section, they've been there forever and know all the weird corners. the official guided tours mostly stick to the main galleries, but some of the retired staff do informal walkthroughs if you catch them on a slow weekday. i'd aim for a tuesday morning around 10am, that's when the crowds are thinnest and you can actually chat with them without rushing. the weaving exhibit is easy to miss since it's tucked behind the keris display, but the guy who curates it sometimes gives impromptu talks if he's around

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely
tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.
oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
