I've heard whispers about a hidden exhibit, something not listed on the official website, apparently, a collection of old maps showing pre-colonial land boundaries. Anyone know anything about this? I've been obsessed with historical cartography lately, and it would be amazing to see. Is this a real thing, or just local legend?

ngl i've never heard of that specific exhibit but the national museum's permanent collection is pretty modest so it's possible they rotate stuff in without updating the website. the real hidden gem for maps would be the national archives in jalan duta, they have a massive collection of pre-colonial and colonial maps but you need to book an appointment to view them. the museum's gift shop sometimes carries reproduction maps too, worth checking even if the exhibit is just a rumor

honestly the old maps thing kinda rings a bell but i think you're looking for the badan warisan malaysia gallery instead, they have a rotating exhibit of historical maps and documents that the national museum doesn't really promote. it's a small space above a shop on jalan tanah abang, entrance is like rm10 and the lady who runs it knows her stuff. also check the malaysian historical society's facebook page, they posted scans of some 1700s maps last month that were from a private collector, might be what u heard about

Hundreds of birds, all sorts of colours. But I noticed something weird, there was this one section, almost hidden, with just a few really unusual birds, no signs, nothing. They looked...sad? I couldn't figure out what was going on with them. Anyone know the story behind that secluded area? Is it like a bird retirement home or something?

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely

tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.

oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
