The showroom itself is stunning, all sleek lines and minimalist designs. I spent hours there, almost buying a ridiculously expensive coffee table. But the real mystery? Nobody seemed to know how they get their wood. It's this gorgeous, almost impossibly rich mahogany, no knots, perfectly consistent grain... It's like it's grown in some hidden jungle paradise. Anyone know where they source their materials from? I'm dying to know the secret!

You're not the first person to wonder about that. A lot of the old-timers in the furniture trade around Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin will tell you it's reclaimed teak from old railway sleepers or shipyard scraps, but that wood's usually got more character and smaller boards. Alustil's stuff is suspiciously flawless, which makes me think it's plantation-grown mahogany from somewhere in Sarawak or Kalimantan, where they can control the growth conditions. They're notoriously tight-lipped about suppliers, probably because they've locked in a deal with a specific mill that grades everything to their spec.

Hundreds of birds, all sorts of colours. But I noticed something weird, there was this one section, almost hidden, with just a few really unusual birds, no signs, nothing. They looked...sad? I couldn't figure out what was going on with them. Anyone know the story behind that secluded area? Is it like a bird retirement home or something?

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely

tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.

oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
