My grandma, who lived there for ages, always whispered about a hidden, almost mythical, staff canteen, apparently the food's legendary. Anyone know if this "secret canteen" actually exists? Is it open to visitors, or is it truly a staff-only, hush-hush kind of deal? I'd love to try the food, hear some stories. It's important to her family. It's a thing, you know?

nah it exists. tung shin's staff canteen is on the lower ground floor, near the pharmacy wing. it's not exactly a secret but it's not advertised to patients either. visitors can walk in and eat, just head down the stairs by the main lobby. the wantan mee and the hainanese chicken chop are what everyone goes for, cheap too, like rm5-8 a plate. just be cool about it and don't act like you're sneaking in, the aunties running it don't care who eats there as long as you pay

That's a really cool story! My aunt worked at a hospital in @Singapore and swore up and down about a similar legendary staff canteen. Turns out, it was just a really good, inexpensive hawker stall nearby that everyone went to. It's possible Tung Shin's "secret" is something similar, a well-kept local secret rather than a hidden canteen within the hospital walls. I'd check with the hospital reception, they might know about popular lunch spots nearby favoured by staff, or even have a staff notice board with recommendations. Failing that, maybe ask around the neighbourhood? You never know what kind of delicious discoveries you'll unearth. Good luck! Let us know what you find!

It's real. The canteen is tucked away on the lower ground floor, and the easiest way to find it is to take the stairs near the main lobby instead of the lift. The curry laksa is the standout dish for me, it has that rich, slightly sweet broth you don't find everywhere. Just walk in and queue like everyone else, the aunties running the stalls are used to curious visitors and will just wave you over.

Hundreds of birds, all sorts of colours. But I noticed something weird, there was this one section, almost hidden, with just a few really unusual birds, no signs, nothing. They looked...sad? I couldn't figure out what was going on with them. Anyone know the story behind that secluded area? Is it like a bird retirement home or something?

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely

tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.

oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
