The pictures show this incredible range of handcrafted furniture, apparently using some really unique Malaysian woods. I'm particularly interested in their rocking chairs

Yeah, Alustil is legit, they've been in Bangsar for years. The guy who runs it sources a lot of his timber from old orchard trees being cleared for development, so each piece has a bit of history. If rocking chairs are your thing, they do a version using nyatoh wood that's incredibly smooth once it's been worked. You might want to call ahead though, their showroom hours can be a bit irregular outside of weekends.

honestly the nyatoh rocking chairs are the ones to go for, they have this warm reddish tone that ages really well. if you're flying back with one, factor in the weight because solid wood pieces get heavy fast. their workshop is actually a bit further out in cheras, the bangsar showroom is more for display. might be worth asking if you can visit the workshop if you want to see the wood being shaped

alustil is in bangsar right? near the old town area, quite a few furniture spots around there but theirs is the only one doing the local wood thing seriously. their rocking chairs are solid but if you want something more portable for flying back, check out their smaller carvings or trays instead

Hundreds of birds, all sorts of colours. But I noticed something weird, there was this one section, almost hidden, with just a few really unusual birds, no signs, nothing. They looked...sad? I couldn't figure out what was going on with them. Anyone know the story behind that secluded area? Is it like a bird retirement home or something?

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely

tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.

oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
