I'm not into fancy restaurants, more interested in the hole-in-the-wall type places locals love. Any recommendations for truly authentic Malaysian food in Mont Kiara, places that aren't plastered all over TripAdvisor? I'm hoping to avoid the tourist traps and find somewhere a little more... genuine. I'm pretty adventurous, so don't hold back!

fyi there's a hidden gem in the shoplots along jalan kiara 2 called Restoran Nasi Kandar Pelita, but not the main branch, the smaller one next to the 7-Eleven. their nasi kandar is legit, the fish curry is spicy and the fried chicken is always fresh, not sitting under a heat lamp. also, the popiah basah from a stall inside the morning market at jalan kiara 1 is worth waking up early for, it's only there till like 9am. just a heads up, the sambal there will make your nose run

if u can walk a bit from mont kiara, head to the food court at 1 Mont Kiara mall, the upper floor. there's a stall called 'kedai kopi' that does a killer curry mee, the broth is thick and coconutty, not the watery stuff. also, on jalan kiara 4, there's a mamak spot under the apartment block that does maggi goreng with extra crispy fried egg, it's open late and always has a crowd of regulars. try the cendol from the pushcart near the shell station on jalan duta, it's the real deal with gula melaka, not the factory syrup.

The guy's right that Mont Kiara itself leans polished, but there's a solid secret spot inside Plaza Mont Kiara's basement. Look for the small stall run by an aunty selling nasi lemak with sambal that actually has a kick, not the sweet tourist version. It's tucked near the back by the old bookstore, and you'll know it's legit because the office workers queue there from 11am. For something different, the roti canai at Restoran Goh's in the shoplots along Jalan Kiara 3 is consistently good and costs around RM3 a piece.

Hundreds of birds, all sorts of colours. But I noticed something weird, there was this one section, almost hidden, with just a few really unusual birds, no signs, nothing. They looked...sad? I couldn't figure out what was going on with them. Anyone know the story behind that secluded area? Is it like a bird retirement home or something?

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely

tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.

oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
