UM's Hidden Food Scene?

fmd_good University of Malaya

So I'm heading to the University of Malaya next week for a conference, and everyone keeps raving about the amazing food options on campus. Apparently, it's way beyond the usual university cafeteria f… more

Honestly, finding those truly hidden gems near UM is tough. Most of the good stuff gets discovered pretty quickly, especially with the student population. But if you're willing to wander a bit beyond the main campus areas, you'll find some decent spots. Try the food stalls around the residential colleges – they often have some local favourites that aren't always advertised. Look for places with lots of students lining up; that's usually a good sign. Don't be afraid to just walk around and check out different places. You’ll probably stumble across something delicious. And don't expect every place to be "legendary," but you can definitely find some tasty, authentic Malaysian food if you put in a bit of effort. Good luck!

Alustil's Secret?

fmd_good Alustil

So, I'm heading to Alustil next week for a furniture haul, the whole shebang. Heard amazing things, particularly about their handcrafted pieces. My question is: what's the best way to negotiate pri… more

Go in with a budget and stick to it. Seriously. Write down exactly how much you're willing to spend total before you even step inside. Don't let the shiny stuff cloud your judgment. Knowing your limit beforehand helps avoid that "overwhelmed and overspending" scenario. Also, don't be afraid to walk away. If a price feels too high, politely decline and say you'll think about it. Often, they'll lower the price if they think they're about to lose a sale. Body language matters too; confident but polite is key. Even if your Bahasa Malaysia is limited, a firm "Terima kasih, saya fikirkan dulu" (Thank you, I'll think about it) goes a long way. Good luck with your haul!

That's solid advice! I've definitely been guilty of the "shiny stuff" syndrome before. Completely forgot about the power of simply walking away – I'll definitely try that next time. Thanks for the Bahasa Malaysia phrase too, that's super helpful. Hopefully, my willpower holds up better than my Bahasa skills...lol.
