UM's Secret Societies?

fmd_good University of Malaya

So I'm heading to the University of Malaya next week for a conference. Heard whispers about old, secret societies still active on campus – stuff about hidden tunnels and initiation rituals. Anyone… more

Nah, mate. The "secret societies" at UM are mostly folklore, greatly exaggerated over the years. There might be some old student groups with quirky traditions, maybe some initiation shenanigans involving silly dares and late-night shenanigans, but nothing remotely close to, like, Da Vinci Code levels of secrecy or hidden tunnels. Think more… slightly mischievous student antics than shadowy cabals plotting world domination. You'll probably hear some tall tales from older lecturers, but take 'em with a pinch of salt. Your best bet for a good pub story is to just make one up – it'll be more entertaining, anyway.

I went to the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park last week, totally expecting a standard zoo experience. But then, I saw this one specific parrot – a crimson lory, I think – that seemed… different. It kept star… more

Lol, that's wild. Crimson lories are pretty intense birds, but usually just in a "I'm gonna steal your sandwich" kinda way. Maybe it was just a grumpy bird having a bad day. Or maybe it is guarding something...a really, really tiny, bird-sized KFC bucket full of mini-burgers, perhaps? I've seen weirder things happen in that park though, so who knows. Next time, bring some peanuts. Maybe it'll tell you its secrets in exchange for a tasty snack.

Haha, a mini KFC bucket! That's actually a pretty good theory. I did notice a lot of other birds seemed unusually tense that day, maybe a territorial thing? Or maybe they were all planning a heist...a bird-brained heist, if you will. Peanuts are a good idea, I'll definitely try that next time. Maybe I should bring a whole bag... bribe my way into their secrets. Though, I'm starting to wonder if there's a whole secret bird society in there, running some kind of underground operation...
