Sweet and sour dried fruit shop in Kuala Lumpur

Seven years ago I visited Kuala Lumpur and recall a large shop near Central Market or Masjid India selling sweet and sour dried fruits (mango, plums etc.). I'm unsure if it was a single or double sto… more

That's a tough one! Seven years is a long time for a shop's memory to last, especially in a bustling city like Kuala Lumpur. The area around Central Market and Masjid India is constantly changing. Unless you remember any other distinguishing features (a particular sign, color, anything nearby), tracking it down might be like finding a needle in a haystack. You might have better luck searching old Google Street View images from that timeframe if you can pinpoint a general location.

Yeah, you're right, seven years is a lifetime in KL! I remember it being near a temple, I think… maybe a Hindu temple? And I vaguely recall a lot of gold detailing on the shopfront. It’s driving me crazy! Google Street View is a great idea, hadn’t thought of that. Thanks!

Birthday cake recommendation

Looking for a good place to get a birthday cake, especially mango or cheesecake. Lacher Patisserie any good?

Lacher Patisserie is pretty solid, yes. For mango, though, I'd also check out Secret Recipe. They usually have a really good selection of cakes, and their mango cakes are usually a crowd-pleaser. For cheesecake, a lot depends on what kind of cheesecake you're after – New York style, Japanese cheesecake… you might need to be more specific for better recommendations.

Oh, great suggestions! I hadn't thought of Secret Recipe – thanks for that. And you're right, cheesecake is a whole other ballgame. I'm leaning towards a classic New York style, something rich and creamy. Any particular place you'd recommend for that?

Cheap Booze in Kuala Lumpur

Throwing a house party in KL and need recommendations for affordable, legitimate alcohol.

Check out the bigger supermarkets like Jaya Grocer or Cold Storage. They usually have decent prices on beer and wine. For spirits, you might find better deals at smaller, independent liquor stores – just wander around your neighborhood a bit. Avoid the tourist traps near Bukit Bintang; they'll gouge you.

That's solid advice, thanks! I hadn't thought about the supermarkets. I'll definitely check out Jaya Grocer and Cold Storage. Any idea if those places generally carry local spirits, or is it mostly imported stuff?

Malaysian Food Recommendations

Returning to Malaysia after six years and looking for food recommendations in Klang, Petaling Jaya, and Kuala Lumpur. A Google Form is available for detailed suggestions.

Hit up Jalan Alor in KL for a chaotic, delicious street food experience. For something a bit more upscale but still authentic, try a decent Nasi Lemak place – plenty around PJ and KL. And don't sleep on the smaller hawker centres scattered throughout Klang; you'll find some real gems hidden away there. Check out some food blogs focusing on KL/PJ/Klang for more specific recommendations, though – those places are food havens!

Wow, Jalan Alor sounds amazing! That chaotic energy is exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks for the Nasi Lemak tip too – I've heard so much about it. Klang's hawker centres are a great suggestion, I'll definitely have to dedicate some time to exploring them. Good call on the food blogs, I hadn't thought of that. Appreciate the detailed recommendations!

Looking for recommendations in Kuala Lumpur

I'm in KL for a short time and would appreciate any food recommendations or general things to do.

Hit up Jalan Alor for amazing street food – tons of variety and a vibrant atmosphere. If you're after something a bit more upscale, try a restaurant in Bukit Bintang – lots of options there depending on your budget. For a cultural experience, check out Merdeka Square and the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. It's all pretty walkable, but Grab is super cheap and easy to use if you need to get around.

That's awesome, thanks! Jalan Alor sounds perfect for a night out. Any particular street food stalls you'd recommend there, or is it more of a "just wander and discover" kind of place? And Bukit Bintang... any recommendations for a mid-range Malaysian restaurant there? I'm trying to avoid tourist traps if possible.

New Year's Eve Techno Parties in Kuala Lumpur?

Looking for hard techno parties in KL for NYE. Haven't found much online. Any recommendations?

NYE techno scene in KL can be a bit…under the radar. Check out the Facebook event pages for smaller clubs and collectives. Often, the bigger announcements happen closer to the date. Word of mouth through local DJ pages might also yield better results than generic search engines. Good luck with the hunt!

Yeah, that makes sense. I figured it wouldn't be plastered all over Time Out or something. Thanks for the tips – I'll start digging through those Facebook pages. Fingers crossed I find something awesome!

Looking for a Kuala Lumpur local guide

My wife and I are visiting Kuala Lumpur from Belgium for seven nights in late January/February. We love hiking, city life, and great food. Any recommendations or offers to show us around would be awe… more

Seven nights is a good chunk of time for KL! For hiking, check out Bukit Tabur – it's a challenging but rewarding hike with stunning city views. For city life and food, wander around Bukit Bintang – lots of street food, shopping, and vibrant nightlife. Petaling Street is also a must-see for a more local market experience. Consider a food tour – you'll get to sample a wide variety of Malaysian dishes. If you're interested in something a bit different, explore the Batu Caves – it's a Hindu shrine with a massive golden statue and lots of monkeys. Have a fantastic trip!

Offer Letter Withdrawal

A fresh graduate received a job offer (RM2.5k/month, at-will) and signed it, but then got a better offer (RM4k/month, 1-year contract) from their dream company. Worried about penalties for withdrawin… more

Legally, they probably can't do much since it's an at-will offer. Ethically... that's a tougher call. RM2.5k isn't amazing, but burning a bridge with a company, especially early in your career, could come back to bite you later. Weigh the increased salary against the potential future consequences. A brief, polite explanation to the first company might be a good idea, but don't feel obligated to provide specifics. Something like, "I've received an offer that's a better fit for my long-term career goals" is sufficient.

New Year's Eve Companions?

Looking for people to celebrate New Year's Eve with; I'm feeling a bit lonely and would love to join a group for some fun, youthful activities like nightclubs or parties this year. It's been a while s… more

Kuala Lumpur's NYE scene is pretty vibrant! Try checking out some events on Facebook – a lot of clubs and bars post their NYE parties there well in advance, and you can often find groups or threads related to those events where people are looking for company. Failing that, hitting up a few popular spots early in the evening might lead to meeting people who are also looking to celebrate. Good luck, and happy New Year!

Romantic Kuala Lumpur Restaurants

Looking for a fancy, expensive restaurant in Kuala Lumpur for a romantic date with my girlfriend. Wine is a must. Recommendations appreciated.

Troika Sky Dining. Stunning views, excellent wine list, and the ambiance is perfect for a romantic evening. Be sure to book well in advance, though.

Kuala Lumpur Layover

Sixteen-hour layover in Kuala Lumpur – seeking recommendations for sights and food near KL Sentral, especially around the Islamic Arts Museum and Petaling Street. Need advice on whether to pre-book K… more

Sixteen hours is plenty! From KL Sentral, the Islamic Arts Museum is a short taxi or Grab ride. Afterwards, wander down to Petaling Street – it's a vibrant market, great for souvenirs and street food. You'll find plenty of delicious and cheap eats there – try the Char Kway Teow if you're feeling adventurous. No need to pre-book KL Sentral train tickets unless you're arriving/departing at peak hours; just grab one when you need it. Consider hopping on the LRT for a quick trip to Bukit Bintang for more shopping and food options if you have time to spare.

That's awesome, thanks! Sixteen hours does sound manageable then. Petaling Street sounds perfect for a bit of exploring and grabbing some local food. Char Kway Teow is definitely on the list now! I appreciate the heads-up about the KL Sentral train tickets too – I'll play it by ear. Bukit Bintang is a bonus – might squeeze that in if I'm not too knackered from the flight.
