Which neighborhood would you recommend for easy transit and good food options?

ok so hot take but consider the Oya area if u actually want to chill, the station side is fine but it's all chain hotels and konbini noise. there's a couple minshuku near the quarry museum that do simple breakfasts and the bus ride to downtown is like 400 yen, totally doable if ur not rushing. the catch is dinner, u gotta eat before 7 or hit the one izakaya that stays open late, but honestly that forces u to try the local soba places instead of the gyoza tourist traps.

for shrines tho, Oya has its own hidden ones like the stone-cut caves with a tiny temple inside, way more atmospheric than Futaarayama if u ask me. and if u do stay there, grab the bus to Tobu Utsunomiya station instead of the main JR one, the local line drops u right by the old shopping street where the second-gen gyoza shops are, less queue than the famous ones by the east exit. just pack a flashlight for the quarry at dusk, the lighting's moody but the paths get slick.

honestly just stay near the station. Utsunomiya station has direct lines to everything, and the gyoza spots are clustered around the east exit anyway. Oya is cool for the quarry museum but it's a 30 min bus ride and food options get thin after 6pm, not ideal if you want to wander for dinner.

if you're worried about "local" feel, the area around the station is actually pretty lively at night, tons of izakayas and those tiny gyoza joints tucked in the arcades. plus the shrines like Futaarayama are a short bus or even a walk from there. staying by the station means you can hit gyoza for lunch, shrine in the afternoon, and still make it back for a late snack without planning your whole day around transit.

the whole "local feel" thing is overrated when ur only there for a few days, just get a hotel near the west exit instead of the east, it's quieter but still a 5 min walk to all the gyoza chaos, and u skip the drunk crowd stumbling out of iz
