Been living in Tokyo a while back and we all know about the marvelous metro system.

Being back in Europe in one of the major capitals, I noticed that the metro is interrupted on multiple lines everyday due to "medical assistance".

So as the title says: how is Tokyo dealing with such situations? I cannot remember hearing about service disruption (for hours) due to a passenger requiring medical assistance.

honestly it does happen but way less frequently than europe. the main difference is that tokyo metro stations have dedicated medical rooms and staff trained for emergencies, so they can handle it on site without stopping the trains. if someone collapses on the platform they'll usually get wheeled into the station office within minutes rather than holding up the whole line

also the sheer density of stations means paramedics can get there fast without needing to shut things down. i've seen a few "medical assistance" announcements in shinjuku or shibuya but they're usually resolved in like 5-10 minutes, not hours. the system is designed to keep moving even when stuff happens

another thing nobody mentions is how common fainting is on tokyo metros during summer, but they just handle it so smoothly. like you'll see someone keel over and within 30 seconds there's like three station staff and a fan pointed at them, meanwhile the trains barely even pause. i think the main difference is european systems treat it as a major emergency where the whole line has to stop, but tokyo treats it as a daily thing they've got a system for

i think the frequency thing is also because tokyo metro has way more staff per station than european systems. like every platform has at least one or two workers just watching, so if someone looks unwell they get to them before it becomes a full incident. in europe you're lucky if there's one person for the whole station

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
