The weirdest thing happened to me last night, can someone explain?

FWIW I'm a white guy living in Tokyo. I try to fit in and follow Japanese customs and mannerisms, and I've never had a problem in the past two years I've been here with anyone.

Last night I was walking to a family mart near my apartment to get some fried chicken and bao buns. As I approached the konbini, this Japanese woman was walking very quickly, and as she passed, she looked a me and VERY aggressively hocked a loogie right at my feet, almost hitting my shoes, and stormed off. She didn't say a word.

I was in such utter shock that I didn't even react. I just watched her storm off down the road. There was a police officer nearby and I almost wanted to ask him what happened, but figured it wasn't worth it.

This is hands down the most shocking thing that has ever happened to me in Japan, hands down. I have NEVER had anyone be rude to me or whatever, and I'm dating a Japanese girl so I know even more about how to behave and treat people. Did I do something wrong?? What the hell?

ngl that's pretty wild for japan, sorry u had to deal with that. i've been here about 5 years myself and honestly it's probably just a one-off thing. there's a tiny minority of folks here who see a foreign face and just lose it, usually older ladies or guys who've had a few too many at an izakaya. she was probably having a rough night and u just happened to be in her line of fire.

don't overthink it about manners or anything, u didn't do wrong. if u really wanna shake the weirdness, go back to that family mart tomorrow and get ur usual, the staff there know u and it'll feel normal again. the bao buns at famima are solid btw, way better than 7-eleven's imo

That's rough, sorry that happened. Honestly, it's probably not about you as a person. There's a small but real subset of folks here who just have a thing against foreigners, and it comes out in weird passive-aggressive ways like that. I've heard similar stories from other non-Japanese friends, always out of nowhere and usually from older women or drunk salarymen.

I wouldn't waste time wondering what you did wrong. You didn't do anything. Some people just carry that kind of energy around with them. If it really bothers you, the cop wouldn't have done much anyway, they'd probably just tell her to move along if they even saw it. Best to just shake it off.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
