So do I need to visit a doctor and have a prescription to buy this drug or what??

honestly if you just show up at a hospital pharmacy they wont sell it to you without a prescription. the pharmacist was telling you the truth, rabeprazole is a category 1 drug here so it needs a doc's approval. ngl you could try a clinic that does online consultations, some of them will prescribe it without you having to come in person. just search "オンライン診療 ラベプラゾール" on google and youll find a few options. the whole process takes like 15 minutes and costs maybe 2000 yen total

honestly if you have a japanese health insurance card just find a 内科 clinic that's not too busy, the wait is usually shorter than a big hospital. some clinics in tokyo like the ones near shinjuku station have english speaking staff if that helps. the prescription will be good for like 14 days worth of meds max, you can't stockpile it

yeah so in japan rabeprazole (they usually call it "parriet" here) is a prescription-only med. pharmacies can't just hand it over the counter. you'll need to see a doctor first - any clinic with internal medicine (naika) can write you a script. clinic visits are usually like 1500-2500 yen without insurance

if you don't have a regular doc just walk into a nearby naika clinic, tell them your stomach issues, and they'll prob prescribe it. some small clinics might give you a different PPI like omeprazole instead but most will write rabeprazole if you ask specifically. hospital pharmacies are just better stocked than your neighborhood drugstore thats why they said that

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
