should I be worried about my apartment with the quake?

Hi guys, I live in Meguro on the 8th floor but am not back until tomorrow, should I be worried about my place being trashed when I come back? Thanks Hi guys, I live in Meguro on the 8th floor but am not back until tomorrow, should I be worried about my place being trashed when I come back? Thanks

honestly 8th floor in meguro is pretty safe for a quake like that. the older lowrise buildings near gakugeidaigaku station are more likely to have issues than a newer midrise. just expect your fridge magnets and any loose bottles on the counter to be on the floor, maybe a few things shifted in cabinets. i'd check the gas meter when you get back and reset it if the red light is blinking, that's the most common nuisance after a shake

You'll probably be fine. Meguro didn't get much shaking, and most buildings that went up in the last 20 years are built to handle it. The biggest risk on the 8th floor is stuff falling off shelves or a tipped over bookcase, not structural damage. Unless someone nearby had a fire or a pipe burst, your place is almost certainly just a bit messy at worst.

fwiw my friend lives 2 floors above you in a similar building and she just sent me a pic, looks like her bookshelf tipped and a couple glasses broke in the kitchen but nothing serious. the thing nobody mentions is checking your balcony, some people had planters and drying racks shift around or fall off. also if your elevator is out when you get back, that stair climb on 8th floor is gonna be rough

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
