Hernia surgery in Tokyo?

Looks like I'll need this in the new year. Fun.

Anyone have successful laparoscopic inguinal hernia surgery covered by NHI in Tokyo and mind sharing where and by which doctor? Thanks.

Happy New Year…

I had mine done at Tokyo Metropolitan Hiroo Hospital a few years back, not laparoscopic but open mesh, and the surgeon was Dr. Tanaka in the gastroenterology surgery unit. The whole thing cost me about 30,000 yen out of pocket with NHI, which included the hospital stay of two nights. What I'd say is don't stress about finding a specific "famous" doctor, the municipal hospitals here handle these surgeries constantly and the results are solid. One tip: ask your GP for a referral to a hospital with a dedicated hernia clinic, like the one at Kameda Medical Center in Chiba if you're willing to travel, they see hundreds of these cases a year and the coordination is smoother.

One more name to throw in: the hernia clinic at Juntendo University Hospital in Bunkyo. Dr. Ota there runs it, and they do a high volume of laparoscopic inguinal repairs with mesh. I didn't have surgery there myself, but a colleague did last spring and the whole process felt very streamlined, pre-op checks one day, surgery the next morning, out in two nights. Total was around 38k yen out of pocket with NHI.

The bigger point though is timing. January is brutal for hospital slots anywhere in Tokyo, so if you can get your GP referral sorted this week and book the consultation now, you'll have a much better shot at a February date. Also ask about the mesh type, some doctors default to a heavier mesh and you'll feel it more in the first month, lighter ones settle faster but cost a bit more even with NHI.

ive had mine at toranomon hospital in minato, dr. sato in the digestive surgery dept. he does a ton of laparoscopic hernia work, loads of referrals from other clinics. NHI covered it, i paid around 35k yen all in, one night stay. the thing is, toranomon is a big teaching hospital so you get residents involved, but the actual surgery was smooth and follow-up was easy.

if you want something smaller, try sanno hospital near aoyama-itchome, theyre more boutique but still NHI. i know a guy who went there for the same op, said the waiting room was nicer and the surgeon took more time explaining. either way, get the referral from your GP first, walk-ins there are a mess.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
