How often do you run into mentally disturbed people in the train? How do you handle them staring at you?

i've been riding tokyo trains for years and it's really not a daily thing. the guys who stare are usually just drunk salarymen or older folks who've zoned out, not actually dangerous. if you catch someone staring hard, a loud "nani?" or just moving to the next car usually ends it. for peace of mind, stick to the yellow priority seats area near the doors where there's more people around, especially on the oedo line where the cars are narrower and it's harder to avoid someone

honestly it's not a daily thing but you'll encounter it. the key is that most of these folks are harmless and more focused on their own thing than you. if someone's staring just move to another car, it's that simple. tokyo trains are huge and you can always find a different spot. for women the women-only cars on the marunouchi line during rush are a solid choice, they're usually calmer and less crowded too.

honestly it happens but not as often as you'd think from the stories online. i've been riding tokyo trains for years and maybe see something once every couple months. most of the time it's just someone talking to themselves or muttering, not aggressive at all.

for staring specifically, just move cars. no one will think twice about it, it's super normal to switch carriages. if you're a woman, try the women-only cars during rush hour on most lines like the chuo or keihin tohoku, they're well marked and make a big difference.

if someone's really locked on you and it feels off, standing near the conductor's booth or the door with the emergency button is smart. but honestly 99% of the time a quick glance away and they move on to staring at the ceiling or their phone.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
