Any free tatami or gymnastic mats area open to public in Tokyo (to practice martial arts)?

akihabara's got some late-night community dojos that rent out space super cheap after 9pm, like the one above the pachinko parlor on chuo-dori. you don't need to be a member, just pay 500 yen at the door and use the tatami room until midnight.

honestly check out the community gyms in bunkyo ward, like the one near todaimae station. they have these multipurpose rooms with soft flooring that people use for capoeira and aikido, and it's free if you're a resident or have a friend who can sign you in. the booking system is a pain in the ass though, you gotta call on the first of the month at 9am sharp or it's gone by noon

a few of the public sento in tokyo have tatami resting areas that are basically empty during weekday afternoons, like the one near sugamo station called jakotsuyu. no one really uses the tatami room there except old guys napping so you can stretch out and practice rolls if you're quiet about it. just pay the 500 yen bath fee and head straight to the resting area, the staff usually won't care as long as you're not being loud

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
