Wildlife reserve near Tokyo: was this tour a scam?

Paid cash, no receipt, and the 'reserve' turned out to be a fenced lot with a few goats. Was I scammed or is this just how some of these tours work in 2026?

Yeah, that's a scam, nobody legit sells wildlife tours cash-only near station exits, and real deer trips mean Nara or Miyajima, not a fenced lot.

Image sylwia local ·

The legit day trips run from Shinjuku or Tokyo Station with printed tickets and a phone number, and cash only at a station exit is the tell.

Even the printed-ticket ones can be resellers, check the operator name against a real office before paying anything.

Takao-san has actual wild monkeys, no ticket needed.

true but they stay high up in the trees mostly, takaosann is more about the hike & the soba at the top. if u actually want monkeys close up, jigokudani in nagano is the real one, snow monkeys in the onsen

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down
Image isedore local ·

jigokudani is worth the trip but the walk in from the bus stop is like 30 min in snow, bring proper boots. and the monkeys there are wild, no touching, keep food zipped away or they'll go for ur bag

Good call on the boots. From Nagano Station it's a bus to Kanbayashi Onsen then that walk, and in winter the path ices over so crampons beat plain boots. Keep your phone in your pocket too, they grab at shiny stuff.

Best market shopping in Tokyo 2026 near Market Square

fmd_goodMarket Square · #shopping

Do the stalls take cards or is it mostly cash, and what's the best time… I'm visiting Tokyo next month and staying near Market Square, and I'm trying to figure out how the market shopping works there. Do the stalls take cards or is it mostly cash, and what's the best time of morning to go before things sell out?

most stalls at that market are cash only so hit a 7-Bank ATM first & aim for 7-8am before the good stuff goes

Saturday mornings are a different beast, way busier.

Some fish vendors do take PayPay now.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

yeah cash is king, bring coins too

arrow_drop_up 0 arrow_drop_down

Image irmelin local ·

Cash coins matter for the small veg stalls, they round up.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

small 100 yen coins, they never round down

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

7-8am is right but go earlier on Sundays, stalls start packing by 10. Bring small bills since the vendors rarely break a 10,000 yen note early on.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Image helene local ·

Agree, though the ATM queue at 8am eats twenty minutes.

The 7-Bank inside the FamilyMart on the corner is the reliable one, the standalone machines get emptied fast. If you're after fish, vendors start marking down trays around 9:30 rather than selling out early.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

Image sabrine local ·

Honestly the 7-8am window only really holds for fish and the prepared food side. The produce and dry goods stalls don't hit their stride til 9 or so, so don't rush past those. Vendors restock mid-morning anyway, it's not a one-shot sellout.
