Tokyo dating 2026: where do people actually meet?

Is Tapped in Shibuya the kind of place where people actually strike up conversations, or do you mostly meet through apps and work? Curious what surprised foreigners most about the norms.

the app that actually leads somewhere is Pairs, not Tinder. people treat goukon (group blind dates) seriously, often set up by a friend at work. ngl the surprise for foreigners is how slow things move before anyone admits it's a date.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

pairs users actually meet up too, just takes 3 dates

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Tapped works but konkatsu parties and mixers at places like Hub are where most actual dates start, apps included.

hub mixers skew heavy to konkatsu paperwork so ppl treat them like interviews, tbh the standing bar at the shibuya hub is where actual chatting happens

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Standing side after 8pm, seated rooms are dead.

mostly the standing bar side, not the seated mixer rooms

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

Fair, though the Hub crowd skews older konkatsu; younger folks mostly pair off at nomikai or through friends.

Apps get you the first date but the real filter is whether they'll introduce you to their friends after a few months.

Honestly the places that surprise people are the niche interest bars, like the board game cafes in Nakano or the rock bars in Koenji. People go for the hobby and end up talking for hours, which beats a loud club. Foreigners are often thrown by how direct Japanese women can be once you're past the tatemae small talk.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down
Image diana local ·

yeah the directness thing is real, and golden kamuy at the Koenji rock bars is where the actual friend groups form after two or three visits

Best deli sandwiches near Market Deli in Tokyo 2026

fmd_goodMarket Deli · #lunch #sandwiches #deli
Anyone else grab lunch at Market Deli on the regular? Their sandwiches are solid but I wanna know what else is good nearby, thinking of trying somewhere new this week. honestly if you're already at Market Deli just walk 3 min to Doutor on the corner, their katsu sando is cheaper and the coffee's fine. not fancy but tbh I grab it more than the deli these days.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Fair warning the Doutor katsu sando sells out by about 1:30, so go before the office crowd hits.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down
Image anna local ·

yeah 1:30 is optimistic on fridays, i've seen them gone by 12:45 when the sales team orders in bulk

Friday is worse than 1:30, I've seen the tray empty by 12:15 when the Marunouchi crowd comes over.

The tamago sando at the Family Mart two blocks past Doutor is the real sleeper, way better than it has any right to be.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down
Image anna local ·

7-11's version beats it if u get there before the egg salad gets scooped, they use the softer shokupan

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

Image elselotte local ·

that famima is clutch but the one by the station does a mentaiko version til 2 that beats the plain tamago

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

Image mayk local ·

Second this, the egg is properly seasoned not just mayo

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Image jolanda local ·

Agreed on the katsu sando, but skip the Doutor coffee and get the blend at Komeda two doors down instead, it's a proper kissaten pour for barely more. I've been doing that combo since the old Doutor manager left.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down
Image jenny local ·

which kissaten, cause the one by the crossing changed hands
