I'm looking for suggestions on good cycling trails or routes, particularly those suitable for longer rides. I'm open to routes that might require using a bike bag for transport. Additionally, I'd appreciate any general advice for someone getting back into regular cycling and aiming to gradually increase distance. If anyone is interested in riding together occasionally, I'd be open to connecting.

the Tamagawa cycling course is teh easiest starting point, runs about 50km from near Haneda up to Hamura. it's flat and mostly car free so good for building base fitness before you tackle hills. once you want elevation, head out to Okutama via the Ome Kaido, or take the train with a rinko bag to Takao and climb Wada pass and Kazahari toge. for longer stuff people do the Onekan loop or ride out to Enoshima along Route 134, though that coast road gets windy in the afternoon.

fwiw a rinko bag opens up everything west of Tokyo, just avoid rush hour trains. build up slowly, like add 10km a week, and dont skip rest days.

if you want something different from Tamagawa, the Arakawa side is underrated. you can ride from around Kasai Rinkai Park all the way north past Saitama, super flat and almost no cars. gets windy though.

also worth checking out the Tsurumi River path down toward Yokohama if you're closer to Kanagawa. not as long but connects nicely to the bay area.

for getting back into it, dont worry about speed just yet. keep it fun or you'll burn out in a month.

just get a rinko bag honestly, opens up way more than any single route

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
