I'm interested in finding scenic and enjoyable bike trails, particularly routes that might lead toward Haneda or other destinations. I'm open to suggestions for trails in both Tokyo and Kanagawa, and I'm also willing to travel a bit further if needed. Additionally, I'd appreciate any general advice for someone getting back into regular cycling and looking to gradually increase ride distances.

If you want something hillier than the river paths, head out to the Kanagawa side and look at the Yabitsu Pass route. A lot of people take the Odakyu line to Hadano or Shibusawa, then climb up Route 70 toward Miyagase Lake. It's a proper climb, roughly 10km with some steep sections, and the descent toward Lake Miyagase is worth the effort. From there you can loop back through Tsukui or connect toward Doshi if you're feeling ambitious.

For building distance, don't overlook the Onekan and the Tsurumigawa path, they link up nicely and let you string together 50 to 60km without much traffic stress. Also, riding early on weekend mornings before 7am makes a huge difference in Tokyo, the roads are quiet and you get the river paths mostly to yourself. Join a local club if you can, the JBC or a shop ride at a place like Y's Road will teach you the good backstreet connectors faster than any map.

For a Haneda run specifically, try approaching from the Kanagawa side instead. Ride the Tsurumi River path down from around Shin-Yokohama or Hiyoshi, it dumps you near the bay and you can cut across to Haneda via the Kōhoku area. Way fewer people than Tamagawa on a Sunday, like maybe a third of the traffic.

On the distance question, dont chase big numbers early. Add 5km to your longest ride each week and take a full rest week every fourth one. Your knees and sit bones need the slow build more than your lungs do.

One thing nobody tells new riders here, the wind along the bay in spring is brutal after 10am. Head out at 6, back by 9, and youll actually enjoy it.

Nobody's mentioned the Miura Peninsula yet, which is a shame because it's probably the most rewarding day ride from Tokyo. Take the Keikyu line to Misakiguchi, then loop the peninsula through Aburatsubo, Jogashima, and down to Cape Tsurugi. It's about 60 to 70km with rolling coastal terrain, and the views over Sagami Bay on a clear day are worth the train fare alone. The fishing ports have cheap seafood, and you can stop at Misaki for maguro bowls before heading back.

One thing worth knowing, the roads around Jogashima get narrow on weekends and the buses don't leave much room, so stick to weekdays if you can swing it. Also, the Keikyu trains require you to bag your bike or use a rinko bag, so grab one before you go.

For building endurance, ride three days a week rather than one long effort. A 20km Tuesday, 25km Thursday, and 50km Sunday will do more for you than a single 80km slog, and you'll recover faster.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
