It looks so quaint and tucked away on the map! My family's obsessed with finding these little pockets of "normal life" in big cities, away from the usual tourist traps. Anyone know if they have any public events, like a school fair or something, that I could maybe attend? I really wanna see what a typical elementary school day is like in Tokyo. It'd be a cool cultural experience.

yodobashi dai 4 is actually a municipal elementary, not the electronics store lol, easy mixup since the name is everywhere. it sits in a quiet residential pocket and yeah you def cant get in, but the streets around it are great for just wandering. if ur after that normal-life feel, go on a weekday morning and hit the small bakery or the sento nearby, you'll get way more out of it than any school event

if ur set on seeing the inside of a school, theres a better route than crashing a random one. some wards run international exchange days where locals volunteer to help out, and you sign up through the city or ward office, not the school directly. timing matters tho, most of that happens in fall during undokai season. otherwise just ride the local bus through that area on a weekday morning, you'll see the kids walking to school in their randoseru and yellow hats, thats prob the closest you'll get without paperwork

schools there dont really do open fairs for random visitors, but the neighborhood around it is worth walking. look for the shotengai nearby, thats where you'll actually see normal daily life

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
