It's 2 am, I'm starving, and my brain is fried. I stumble in expecting the usual convenience store fare. But then I see it, this tiny, almost hidden corner with these incredible looking onigiri. They're not your average rice balls...these are works of art. Seriously, intricate designs, flavors I've never even heard of. I grabbed three different kinds, and honestly, they were the best onigiri I've ever had in my life. My question is: Are those special onigiri a regular thing, or was I just insanely lucky to find them at that hour? I need to know for future planning.

That corner is actually a bit of a Lawson thing now, some bigger stores set aside a section for premium onigiri made in-house or by a local maker. The catch is they get pulled once they hit their time limit, so anything left at 2am is basically whatever didn't sell. If you want the good stuff reliably, aim for the evening, not the dead of night.

tbh Lawson gets fresh onigiri deliveries a few times a day, so 2am stock depends on whats left from the evening run. the fancier ones with weird fillings are usually part of a limited collab or seasonal push, not a permanent menu. Okubo-dori being right by the Korean town means they sometimes stock stuff you wont see at a random suburban Lawson. next time try going around 11pm, thats when the last big restock tends to land before the overnight lull.

Those fancy ones are almost always a collab run, so if you saw designs with like characters or seasonal motifs they'll probably be gone in a few weeks. The staff at that Okubo-dori store rotate them in pretty often though, so just ask the guy at the register next time what's current. He'll usually know which ones are limited and when the next batch drops.

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
