Anyway, I swear I saw a cat slinking through the aisles, a seriously fluffy Persian. It was gone before I could even react. Did anyone else ever see a stray cat chilling in My Basket? I'm half convinced it's a local legend at this point... maybe it's the manager's pet, escaping for midnight snacks?!

oh that's definitely mittens, she's been doing her rounds for like two years now. i've seen her walk right past the security guard like she pays rent. the staff at the shibuya my basket actually leave out a little water bowl near the back where they keep the rice, i noticed it once when i was digging for onigiri. pretty sure she's more regular than half the customers

yeah mittens is a whole vibe honestly. i saw her once near the registers just chilling on top of the bread rack staring at people like she owned the place. the staff dont even shoo her, they just step around her. i think theres a little dented bowl they fill with water behind the kombucha fridge too, i noticed it when i was grabbing a bottle of matcha. shes prob the most famous cat in shibuya now

Nah, that's not a legend, that's just Mittens. She's famous. Everyone knows Mittens. She's basically the unofficial greeter. Apparently, she has a thing for the salmon filets. Someone posted a pic of her a few months ago, napping in a display of canned tuna. She's surprisingly well-behaved for a supermarket cat. Don't worry, she's harmless. Probably.

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

While the local bacon works well in many recipes, I specifically want the crispy type. Where might I find this style of bacon?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
