Apollo Station Okubo SS Nightmare?

I swear, there's always a line. Anyway, I'm pumping gas, right?, and this dude pulls up next to me, starts blasting J-Pop at full volume from his car. I mean, ear-splitting, headache-inducing loud. Seriously distracting. My question is: are there any unwritten rules of gas station etiquette in @Japan I should know about to avoid this kind of situation in the future? Is blasting music at max volume standard practice?? I nearly spilled gas on myself. It was a whole thing.

oh man, apollo station okubo is notorious for being a zoo honestly. that specific one on the main road near okubo station is always packed cause it's one of the cheapest in shinjuku area. the music thing is def not standard practice, sounds like a guy who just doesnt care about his surroundings. if you want a calmer experience there's a cosmo station a few blocks east on yasukuni-dori, it's a bit pricier but the line moves way faster and people are more chill. also if you ever get that again just pull the nozzle out a bit and make eye contact, most people get the hint without you saying anything

Wow, that's a rough refueling experience. There aren't really written rules about car audio volume at gas stations in Japan, but common courtesy dictates keeping it at a reasonable level. People generally try to avoid being disruptive. Your experience sounds more like a bad apple than the norm, though I can see how that would be infuriating, especially considering the already stressful situation of a crowded gas station. Next time, maybe try a different station? Or, if you're feeling brave (and the situation allows), a polite "Sumimasen..." might do the trick. You could also try subtly pointing to your ears and making a face... it might get the message across. Most people are pretty conscious of noise levels around others.

Yeah, totally get that. It wasn't so much the volume itself, more the attitude. Dude was practically blasting death metal and gave me this stink eye when I even glanced his way. I should of just left, I guess. Next time I'll definitely try a different station, even if it means driving a bit further. Subtlety is probably the way to go, politely asking is way too risky in that situation, I'm not risking another death stare lol. Thanks for the tips!

that apollo station is always a mess, i live a few blocks away and avoid it like the plague even if it saves me like 2 yen per liter. the music thing is just some guy being obnoxious, not a japanese gas station custom or anything. if you're in that area there's a shell on the corner of yasukuni-dori and gaien-nishi-dori that's usually quieter and the attendants are faster at waving you in. also next time just turn your car off and wait them out, hard to blast music with no engine running and they'll get bored eventually

Best aquarium in Tokyo 2026: Ocean Center worth it?

Any recs for a clinic near Shinagawa that takes national health insurance, and what a walk-in visit usually runs? Also, is the aquarium actually worth the ticket price in 2026 or should we just do Sunshine Aquarium instead?

Sunshine Aquarium is the better rainy-day pick with kids, and Maxell Aqua Park handles strollers easier than Ocean Center's ramps.

yeah the ramps there are rough with a stroller

For the back, try a seikotsuin instead of a clinic, they take insurance and walk-ins run about 1,500 yen.

Ocean Center's penguin and jellyfish halls justify the price, but weekend seikotsuin slots fill fast so call ahead.
