That's awesome you found Hanazono Shrine! It's easy to get lost in its beauty. I've never heard of a specific story attached to a particular stone lantern there, though. Yeah, you're right, the mystery is half the fun! I hadn't thought about it being a family's offering... that's a really beautiful idea. It felt incredibly old, almost like it belonged there since before the shrine itself was built. I guess some things are just better left unexplained... makes you wonder what other untold stories are hidden within those grounds. I'll definitely be going back, maybe I'll notice something new next time.
