Apparently, one time someone got a perfectly cooked takoyaki from it?! Seriously. Anyone know the truth behind the Kanto vending machine enigma? Is it just a rumour, or should I bring extra yen?

ngl the takoyaki thing is real-ish but not like you think. There's a vending machine near the gym that used to be a test run for some frozen food company back in 2019, it still has weird stuff sometimes. I've seen melon pan that was actually warm once, but it's more "weird flavor kitkats" than street food. If you want the real deal, hit up the combini on Oshiage street heading south, they have a better selection anyway. Still worth trying the machine once for the story, just don't expect a full meal.

yeah the machine is real but the takoyaki thing is overblown. the one behind the art building sometimes has random stuff from the home ec teachers who test recipes on students, ive gotten a weird matcha crepe from it before. if you want actual good vending machine food theres a cafe near the west exit that has a self-serve one with proper hot soba, way better use of 300 yen

honestly theres a bit more to it than just frozen food tests. the machine near the science wing is legit older than most of the students, it was part of a school festival project way back in 2015 that never got fully removed. sometimes it gets stocked with leftovers from the home ec class, which is how you get the takoyaki thing. ive seen curry bread in there once but it was lukewarm at best. if you go check it out bring like 300 yen and try your luck, but the real hidden gem is the mom and pop bakery across from the east gate, they do a killer anpan for 150 yen.

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

agreed on kiyosumi being calmer, but the tawaman effect in kuramae is mostly along the edo-dori side. walk 5 min toward kotobashi & rents drop again. still cheaper than miyamasuzaka either way

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
