Yeah, the bonsai/martial arts thing is seriously weird, right? I figured it was exclusive, but networking beforehand is a good call. I'll try to find someone going to the conference – maybe someone on that online forum for international students? Fingers crossed I can get some intel before I go. If not, I'll just have to enjoy the cherry blossoms and pretend I'm in a Miyazaki film. The whole thing is already sounding more interesting than I ever expected!
