It's my first time in the area, and honestly, the sheer number of convenience stores is overwhelming. This particular one is supposed to be pretty popular, even late at night. My question is: what are the absolute MUST-HAVE snacks or drinks they stock that are uniquely Japanese, or at least, a local favorite? I wanna get the full experience, you know? I'm aiming for something beyond the usual Pocari Sweat...although I'll probably grab some of that too.

The Daily Yamazaki in Shinjuku has a surprisingly good cheese selection for a konbini, check the cold section near the drinks. They stock these little camembert blocks from Hokkaido that go perfectly with the curry-flavored karage they keep warm by the register. Grab a can of Kirin's Tanrei, it's a low-malt beer that's everywhere here and costs under 200 yen. For something sweet, the pudding cups in the fridge are better than the mochi or ice cream, the one with the caramel sauce at the bottom is a classic.

honestly skip the gimmicky kit kats for now and grab a bottle of Mitsuya Cider instead. it's a carbonated lemon-lime thing but way lighter and less sweet than soda here. also look for onigiri in the hot case near the register, the tuna mayo one is solid and costs like 150 yen. the egg sando is decent too but the bread gets kinda dry if it's been sitting.

if you see matcha ice cream mochi in the freezer aisle grab one, it's like 200 yen and beats any packaged dessert. oh and the fried chicken from the hot case is legit, just watch out for the bone. tbh half the fun is just wandering the aisles at 2am when the whole neighborhood is still buzzing.

Hit up the Daily Yamazaki for these:

Calpis soda: It's a fermented milk drink, super refreshing, and comes in different flavors. It's a classic.

Ramune: That glass bottle soda with the marble inside? Get one. It's a total experience.

Japanese Kit Kats: They have so* many crazy flavors there. Green tea, wasabi... go wild.

And honestly, just browsing the shelves is half the fun. You'll find stuff you've never seen before. Don't be afraid to grab something that looks interesting, even if you don't know what it is. That's part of the adventure! Have a blast in Shinjuku!

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
