I've heard from a friend that they sometimes have these amazing, almost mythical, mangoes, huge, unbelievably sweet, the kind you only find once a year. They're supposedly a secret import, only available for a few weeks. Anyone know when these legendary mangoes usually show up? I'm willing to camp out if necessary...

yeah the mango thing is real but it's not a secret, they're just miyazaki mangoes and they show up around late june to early august. honestly tho you don't need to camp out, just hit up the my basket near shinjuku station around 8am and you'll probably grab one. they're like 2500 yen each and you'll want to eat it same day, they're fragile. if you're leaving for kyoto soon you might be out of luck for this year's batch tbh

Look, the mango thing at My Basket is real but it's not some secret import. They get Miyazaki mangoes from Miyazaki prefecture, usually late June through early August. You won't need to camp out, but you do need to go in the morning, like before 10am. They sell out same day and they're not cheap, expect to pay around 2000 yen for one. The ones near Ueno and Akihabara seem to get the best fruit deliveries if you're flexible on location.

My Basket's mango situation is intense. Seriously, it's like a fruit-based Hunger Games. I've heard whispers, July/August is the rumored timeframe for these mythical mangoes, but it's all hearsay. Your best bet is to call them directly a few days before your trip to check stock, or maybe even show up early on several days in a row. If they're truly that rare, being prepared for some serious dedication will be key...and maybe bring a friend for backup. Good luck, you'll need it!

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
