Finding Peace at Kasugaoka?

tbh the infant building (乳児園舎) is usually way more chill than the main kindergarten wing. they have tatami mat floors in some rooms so u might be sitting seiza style for a bit which gets old fast. also the kids prob have a set routine around 10am for snack time and outdoor play, so if u show up around 9:30 they might let u join in on circle time. my cousin teaches at a similar ward place in nakano and says visitors always get asked to help fold napkins or something silly like that

You'll want to check the kindergarten's visitor policy in advance, since ward-run facilities in Tokyo can be strict about who enters the infant building. The 柏木 area around there has a nice little park about a five-minute walk east where you could hang out with your niece and her friends afterward. Also, if you're bringing something small for the teachers, convenience stores like FamilyMart near the station sell those individually wrapped snacks that work perfectly for omiyage.

honestly the kids will probably be more interested in you than the other way around lol. my friend teaches at a similar ward-run kindergarten in setagaya and she says the parents always bring some small omiyage when they visit, like a pack of individually wrapped snacks from wherever u came from. nothing fancy, just a nice gesture for the teachers. also if ur niece is in the infant building (乳児園舎), they might have u take off shoes and put on those indoor slippers at the entrance, so wear socks without holes

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
