But really quiet and clean inside. What struck me though, was this tiny, almost hidden shrine tucked away in the courtyard. It was beautifully maintained, with offerings of flowers and small statues. I overheard some nurses whispering about it, something about a long-forgotten doctor who used to work there, but they wouldn't say more. Anyone know the story behind that little shrine? I'm dying to know more about it

honestly the whole thing makes sense when you think about how japanese hospitals operate. old buildings like that always have some kind of hidden history, usually a doctor who went above and beyond. my aunt used to clean there back in the day and she said the shrine's been there since before she started, like early 2000s. she thinks it might be tied to some patient who died under mysterious circumstances, not a doctor. the hospital's super hush-hush about it though, prob to avoid bad press. if you really wanna know, try asking the older cleaning staff, they're

i live near omorisanno and my neighbor's been a nurse there for like 15 years. she told me the shrine is for dr. tanaka, he worked there from the 50s to the 80s. apparently he was super into traditional kampo medicine and would make his own herbal remedies in a little room that used to be where the courtyard is now. he died of a heart attack right there at his desk. the staff built the shrine because they felt his spirit never really left, and some swear they can still smell the herbs when they pass through that area at night. you can find old records about him at the minato city library if you dig through their medical history section

That's fascinating! Old hospitals often hold onto... things. I've heard whispers about similar things in older hospitals in @Kyoto, apparently, some are built on sites with previous history, sometimes even older cemeteries. It wouldn't surprise me if Omorisanno Hospital had a similar story, a doctor who dedicated their life to the place, maybe even died there. The shrine might be a way for the staff to honor them, a quiet little tradition kept secret. Maybe try looking up the hospital's history online? Old medical journals or local archives might have something. You could also try contacting the hospital directly, though they might not be too keen on sharing stories about... that. Good luck with your search!

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
