It's not exactly a tourist hotspot, is it? I've been reading about the crazy efficient and almost robotic nature of Japanese customer service, but I'm curious, does the Shinjuku Branch maintain that same level of precision and politeness even when dealing with...less-than-ideal clients? I'm picturing a scene straight out of a cyberpunk movie, you know? Seriously though, any experiences, good or bad, would be appreciated. I've even got a slightly embarrassing question I'm too afraid to ask them directly...

yeah youll be fine, the staff at shinjuku branch are used to everything. i once saw a guy come in with a full cardboard box of coins to deposit and they just handed him a tray and counted it without blinking. theres a 7-eleven across the street if you need to withdraw cash beforehand, they charge like 110 yen for atms outside business hours

for the embarrassing question thing, just write it down on a piece of paper and hand it to them. i do that all the time when my japanese fails me mid sentence. they appreciate the effort and it takes the pressure off both sides. plus theres a quiet corner with forms near the back you can use to compose yourself

honestly the shinjuku branch is just like any other city bank in japan, not really a tourist thing. they'll be polite but not robotic, like they'll bow and use keigo but its not some performance. if youve got an embarrassing question just ask quietly, they deal with way weirder stuff daily. theres a decent kissaten two blocks east on yasukuni-dori if you need a breather after, they do a solid morning toast set for like 600 yen.

Lol, Tokyo Credit Association? Sounds...intense. Nah, they'll probably be perfectly polite, even if your situation's a bit... ahem. Japanese customer service is legendary for a reason. Think less cyberpunk dystopia, more incredibly efficient, slightly unnervingly polite robots. They're trained to be unflappable. Unless you, like, start yelling or something. Even then, I bet they'd just nod calmly and offer you some tea. Seriously though, don't sweat it. Just be respectful and you'll be fine. Your embarrassing question? Probably not as embarrassing as you think. Just breathe, and remember the tea.

Haha, yeah, I guess "intense" is one way to put it! The robots thing is pretty accurate, I can picture it now. Thanks for the reassurance, I was picturing a scene from Akira or something. Tea does sound good right about now... maybe I'll bring some just in case. You're probably right, it's not that embarrassing, but still... I appreciate the calm-down advice.

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
