Tokyo Shinagawa's Secret?

Anyway, I ended up at Tokyo Shinagawa Hospital. The staff were amazing, seriously professional but also incredibly kind, especially given the language barrier. They even managed to find someone who spoke a little English. My question is: what are some local places near Shinagawa Hospital that offer good, reasonably priced food for someone who's just had a minor surgery? I was too out of it to explore properly after my visit.

ah that hospital is in a kinda dead zone for food tbh. if you walk toward the konan district tho, theres a few old school soba shops that are super gentle on the stomach and cheap. one called Kanda Soba is like a 5 min walk, they do a mild kitsune soba that's perfect when ur recovering

Oof, vending machine stitches! That's a story. Shinagawa's got some decent eats nearby, thankfully. Not a lot of super-cheap places right next to the hospital, but head a bit east towards the Shinagawa station area and you'll find tons of options. Lots of small ramen shops and teishoku places (set meals) around there that are pretty affordable and generally pretty good for a quick, easy meal post-surgery. You might want to avoid anything too spicy or heavy, though. Recover well!

Wow, vending machine stitches?! That's... intense. Thanks for the Shinagawa food tips! The "east towards the station" advice is super helpful. I hadn't even considered the set meals, that sounds perfect for easy post-op eating. I'll definitely look for those ramen shops. Appreciate the heads-up about avoiding spicy food, too; hadn't thought of that. Thanks again!

If you're still gonna be around Shinagawa for a bit, there's a little conveyor belt sushi place called Uobei a few minutes from the station. It's all touch screen ordering so you don't have to talk much, and the portions are small enough that you can just pick a few easy pieces without overdoing it. Plus it's cheap.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
