The observation decks are insane, totally free, and the views of Mount Fuji were breathtaking... if a little hazy that day. Seriously though, the sheer scale of the city from up there is something else. My question is: are there any lesser-known spots around the building itself that offer similar panoramic views, but maybe with a little less of a crowd? I'm thinking hidden rooftop bars or something. I should of planned better, I was only there for like an hour, wish I had more time!

You can try the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building north tower instead. Most people queue for the south tower because the guidebooks push it, but the north tower has the same free view and hardly anyone waits for it. Grab a coffee from the vending machines on the 45th floor and just sit by the windows, it's basically empty after 6pm on weekdays.

honestly i think your best bet for a quieter spot around there is the Park Hyatt's New York Bar up in Shinjuku. yeah it's a bit pricey for a drink but the view is killer and way less packed than the government building. just go during a weekday afternoon if you can.

if u want something really chill and close, skip the hotel bars and head to the Shinjuku Sumitomo Building, it's like a 2 minute walk from the government building. the 50th floor has a free observation lounge that barely anyone knows about, it's mostly office workers grabbing coffee. the view faces south so no mt fuji but u get that insane skyscraper canyon look straight down the street, way more intimate than the gov building. just go through the main entrance and take the express elevator, no security or anything

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
