The attendant, a friendly older gentleman, gave me directions in rapid-fire Japanese, I only caught about half of it. He seemed amused by my struggles, then handed me a small, intricately folded piece of paper with a drawing on it. I think it might be a local legend or something, but I can't decipher it. Any ideas what this could be about? It's a really unique experience you don't get at other gas stations... I should of asked more questions!

i bet that drawing is a map to the yakuza hideout behind the okubo police box, just kidding. more likely it's directions to the fudo shrine at the base of mt takao, the one with the waterfall. the old guys who work those stations have been there for decades and know every shortcut on the mountain. the real mystery is why u didn't just show him google maps on ur phone while u had the chance

lol the mystery paper is prob just a common thing at that station, I've seen pics of those before. the old guys there have a whole system of little origami maps for hikers who cant speak japanese. next time just take a photo of it and ask a conbini clerk

honestly that folded paper thing is a pretty common trick among older guys in that area. theres a guy at the okubo station who does origami maps to the takao-san ropeway instead of using his phone, i've heard stories. the drawing might be a mix of trail markers and local shrine symbols, check if theres a little torii gate or a squiggle that looks like the biwa waterfall. next time just nod and say "arigato gozaimasu" even if you're lost, they appreciate the effort more than the accuracy

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
