Lost in Translation at 7-Eleven?

fmd_good Seven Eleven DR Nishi-Shinjuku Daiwa Roynet Hotel

So, I'm staying at the Daiwa Roynet Hotel near Nishi-Shinjuku and, naturally, I've been hitting up the 7-Eleven across the street a lot. It's amazing how much stuff they cram into those tiny stores!… more

Learn a few basic phrases. "Sumimasen" (excuse me) to get their attention, "Kore kudasai" (this, please) while pointing, and "Arigato" (thank you) at the end. Even those few words go a long way. If you're really struggling, try using a translation app with a picture of what you want – most clerks are used to tourists fumbling with their phones. Download a Japanese phrasebook app, too; it'll save your bacon more than once. And don't sweat the pronunciation too much; they're usually pretty understanding. It's all part of the adventure! Besides, even if you mess up royally, you'll have a good story to tell later.

That's great advice! I hadn't thought about using a picture from a translation app – that’s seriously clever. I always feel so awkward trying to communicate in a different language, even with basic phrases. I'm definitely downloading a phrasebook app now. Thanks for the tips; I'll be much less stressed next time I'm at a 7-Eleven in @Japan. And yeah, a good story is always a plus!

Finding decent coffee near Shinjuku Gyoen?

fmd_good Lawson Three-F Kita-Shinjuku

I'm heading to @Tokyo next month and staying near Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. Lawson Three-F Kita-Shinjuku is conveniently located, according to Google Maps. But I'm a serious coffee snob. Will… more

Lawson coffee... oof. Let's just say it's functional, not inspirational. If you're a serious coffee snob, packing the Aeropress is probably the better option, even with the bulk. Shinjuku's got tons of amazing cafes; you'll find something way better than Lawson within a reasonable walk of the garden. Just wander around a bit – you'll stumble upon something fantastic. Trust me. Trying to find a specific place beforehand might actually limit your options.
