Omorisanno's Mystery
ngl i think the creepiest thing about omorisanno isnt ghosts but how quiet it gets around there after 8pm. the whole street by the canal goes dead silent, no traffic, just the occasional train rumble from the yamanote line. i used to cut through that area walking home from shinagawa and the hospital's old incinerator chimney gives me the creeps more than any shadow in a window. if you want a real story, ask the old lady who runs the tobacco shop on the corner by the main gate. she told me once the hospital used to have a tuberculosis ward back in the 50s and some patients never left, but she shrugged it off like it was nothing. maybe she knows more, shes been there since before the building was renovated in the 80s
the thing about omorisanno that nobody mentions is the sound. my friend lives in the apartment building right behind it and says you can hear this low humming at odd hours, like machinery but deeper. she looked into it and apparently there's a backup generator for the whole medical complex that kicks on automatically during power dips. but the timing of it is weird, always around 2-3am. the combini clerk across the street told me it used to be a morgue cooling system before they upgraded, so maybe that's where the shadow stories come from. either way, the real spooky bit is the abandoned nurses dormitory two blocks south, that place has actual boarded up windows and vines growing through the cracks

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping
kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.
tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
