The gymnasium side gate tip is solid, just be aware the cleaning crew rotates shifts sometimes so 3pm isn't always reliable. If you wanna go the direct route, the head custodian is a guy named Tanaka-san, he's usually in the boiler room near the main entrance around noon. He keeps a little photo album of the school from the 70s, showed it to me once when I was helping with a festival setup. The courtyard's a letdown now with the benches but the album has shots of it covered in cherry blossoms and kendo kids in bogu.
I live a few blocks from there and walk past it most days. That courtyard is real, tucked behind the gymnasium on the east side, but it's not overgrown. They actually repaved it two years ago and put in some benches. The kendo part is true though. An old neighbor who taught there in the 80s told me the club used to practice outside there until they built the new dojo near the front gate. You can still see the worn stone paths if you look closely.
Tanaka-san's photo album is your best bet, but he's not always in the boiler room. Check the janitor's closet on the second floor of the main building around 2pm, he usually takes his break there with a can of Boss coffee. The courtyard's not creepy anymore, but if you want the real old-school vibe, head to the storage shed behind the new dojo. There's a rusted kendo shinai rack leaning against the wall that's been there since before the renovation, still has a couple of broken bamboo swords wedged in it.
