That's awesome advice! I hadn't even considered the tourist info centers – good thinking. I'm pretty rusty with my Japanese, but I can definitely brush up on some basic hiking phrases. Thanks for the heads-up about the water and snacks; I'll make sure to overpack on that front. The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route sounds like a good starting point, then branching out from there. I appreciate the detailed response!
