My aunt raves about how efficient it is, but she's lived in Japan her whole life. I'm a little nervous about navigating the whole system, language barrier and all that. Anyone know how long the average wait time is in the waiting room? Is there anything I should bring to make the wait more bearable, besides my patience and health insurance card? It feels a bit like facing a boss battle, especially with my rusty Japanese.

the digital board shows the number and the kanji for the department, but the romanized name is usually right below it so you wont miss it. if you get called and freeze up, the nurses will usually come find you after a minute or two, theyre pretty patient about it. the waiting area on the third floor by the windows has a nice view of the shinagawa canal if you wanna stare at something calming instead of your phone

honestly the waiting room at shinagawa isnt that bad if u go early morning like right when they open at 8.30. theres a kombini right across the street from the hospital so grab a coffee and maybe an onigiri before u check in. also theres a little pharmacy on the ground floor with decent snacks if u get hungry. most of the reception staff speak enough english to get u through check-in, but having your address written down in japanese on a scrap of paper can save u time filling out forms. bring a book or download something offline bc the wifi there can be spotty

Yeah, the wait can be hit or miss, but I'd say bring a small notebook and pen. Filling out the intake forms in Japanese is way less stressful when you can jot down your symptoms or meds ahead of time, and the nurses appreciate it.

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
