Finding My Way Around

I'm visiting @Tokyo next month and my niece is enrolled at the 区立柏木子ども園乳児園舎. It's a bit of a trek from where we're staying, and the map apps aren't super clear on the best way to get ther… more

Hyperlocal maps like Google Maps are surprisingly unreliable in Japan sometimes, especially for smaller places. Try using a Japanese navigation app like Yahoo! Japan Navigation or Rakuten Navi. They often have better detail and are frequently used by locals. You can input the address in romaji (romanized Japanese) if your Japanese is limited. Also, don't be afraid to ask for help at a train station information booth; most staff speak at least some English. Show them the address written in Japanese (柏木こども園) – that should be enough. A translator device is a good backup plan though! Good luck, and have a great time in Tokyo!

Yeah, My Basket near Shinjuku Gyoen can be a bit of a gamble. It's a massive place, and honestly, some sections are way better curated than others. I've had amazing luck finding fantastic imported cheeses there – seriously, stuff you wouldn't find anywhere else in Tokyo – but I've also seen some…questionable things. My advice? Go early in the week if you can. The turnover seems better then, and the staff are generally more on the ball about checking expiration dates. And definitely check everything yourself before you buy it, no matter how good it looks! Better safe than sorry.
